No. If a habit is inculcated to combine and harmonise the two, it is possible to be independent and be disciplined for both are the state of mind in a personality which is a flexible one. Any body can attempt it and believe me it is possible.

There is nothing that logically separates independence and discipline, nor anything that makes them contradictory.

Lots of people "complain" about lots of things.

There's nothing wrong with "independence." Most people try to teach their children to be "independent thinkers" and not to be dependent on others for life's answers. We also teach them to understand the meaning of "discipline;" that few of life's skills happen without one being "disciplined" enough to learning and mastering them.

I guess I just don't see any contradiction between the two.

yes these are contradictory upto around 20 years age and a person learns basic right and wrong from parents and teachers up to that age . after around 20 years if that person become independent and discipline than he can change any impossible into possible . because if he chooses the field of his interest (being independent) and if he is disciplined than it is impossible that he will not get success.

An indidual can be disciplined by virtue of the fact that he imposes certain rules upon himself. He still retains his independence. For instance he has determined he wants to lose 25 pounds. That is a decision he made for himself and the discipline he is following is based on restrictions he placed upon himself.

Youth need taught taught to BELIEVE rather than simply OBEY the guidelines their elders set out for them. In this way they will discipline themselves and learn to make decisions independtly.

There are prices to pay for both. I believe that they can live in harmony. True discipline - the root word of "discipleship" - can mean total freedom. Just ask some of the monks I know.

one has to be independent to be truly disciplined. the feudal society of the past has influenced the mindset. even the country believed to be democracies tend to believe that disciplined persons ought not to be independent but servile.

Self discipline is a prerequisite of true independence. It's being done every day.

They don't contradict. True freedom and true discipline go hand in hand. People do it all the time--the trick is to get the majority to do it...but that would require lots of effort.
