I hold open doors for woman all the time. It’s out of respect but I see many men not doing that. “Why” Is honor dead or are we starting to slack teaching our children respect?

Most people don't treat their kids in a way that shows anything about respect. I have never raised my voice to any of my children, now 12, 21 and 24. By being a calm, rational parent, and showing respect for them, they do the same for me. I have never had discipline issues in any way with any of them. I think parents are teaching kids the basic skills, or good life lessons. Good on you for having manners and respect! I, as a woman, am always please when someone holds a door for me, and I hold the door for anyone coming behind me, male or female. I am giving your question a star, my dear

???

Opening doors for woman is what honor is all about?

It doesn't have anything to do with, say, keeping your word, or anything but opening doors for women?

First, this is NOT appropriate if the woman for whom you are holding the door open is your subordinate at work.

In the working world, such courtesies are properly done based on rank, not sex.

Which sex people are is not supposed to be relevant in the business world (read Miss Manners if you doubt this). In fact, it's demeaning, as it suggests that a person's sex is the only thing about them; rather than, say their rank or abilities or any relevant thing.

In general, holding doors open as a convenience to others should not only be a sex-based thing. If the person following you out a door is heavily burdened, then it's a nice thing to hold the door, whatever the person's sex.

This is what the door holding rules have become, on the whole.

In other words, it's not that rules have necessarily been abandoned, but they have changed to reflect the shocking revelation that women are human beings -- not decorative things, not helpless, not existing just for the sake of reproduction.

How you got honor into this I'll never know. Someone who cheats and steals, but holds doors open for women is honorable?

Please, consult a dictionary.

BTW, I (a woman) hold open doors for humans (including men) when it makes sense -- I've just gone through and there's a man behind me (rather than letting it slam in his face); when I see a heavily burdened man approach a closed door; for my bosses.

You know, a lot of men who obey these now out-of-date rules also beat their wives and girlfriends -- are they honorable?

It depends totally on family behaviour at home. If we respect our elders our children will do so.
But due to new age we all are leaving separately, children are away from home during study period they do not learn the homely culture. We should teach them to respect the elders and follow the Indian culture which is much stronger than any other culture.

In my situation being a single parent of three boys I instill "manners"in my children. It's how society and how other children do that may or may not be what I've instilled in my children

it depends on the way you were brought up by your parents and they way you bring up your children...people are too busy at work and they don't spend much time with their kids and they can't teach them true values.

Your lady is lucky and so are your kids...good luck
