Get some enzyme based laundry detergent at the grocery store. Make up a wet paste and put it on the stain, leave it overnight and then scrape it. You can then rinse it off with some warm water. If the stain hasn't come out, repeat. Oxygen or Enzyme based laundry powders also work in the same manner, you can use this if you have it.
To help it dry quickly and avoid it going smelly from the moisture, take an iron on dry heat and put paper towel on the stain, then put a thick white towel (must be white, other colours could run) over the paper and iron it. Move the towel around until the carpet is touch dry, don't touch it too soon, the iron gets it hot and the steam will burn. Do not iron the carpet directly as it will damage the carpet.

Go to the pet store & get an enzyme cleaner from the cat supply section designed to remove cat urine stains - I use Simple Solution Cat Spray & Urine Stain & Odor Remover. The enzymes will clean up hairballs better than any other product I've tried (and I've tried a lot over the years!). Gently pick up the hair & solid portion of the hairball, trying to avoid rubbing any into the carpet. Gently blot up the remaining liquid, again avoiding rubbing the liquid in. Then apply the enzyme cleaner, following the instructions on the packaging.
If you feed your cat a food with added coloring, it will be more likely to cause staining if your cat has a hairball. You can cut down on hairballs by adding some high-quality canned food to your cat's diet - canned food without hard-to-digest plant ingredients like soy, corn and wheat is better for a carnivore's digestive system. It also helps to brush your cat regularly.

Get a carpet cleaner for pet stains. Spray it on and use a towel to blot it out. Repeat until it's all gone. Or invest in a small carpet cleaner like the Little Mean Green Machine. It works awesome for all pet & kid stains. Pretty inexpensive considering it will save your carpet, and if you're carpeting is new you'll need it more than once to keep it looking fresh.

I just use spray on carpet cleaner. I have a 17 year old cat who likes to leave nasty orange stains all over my carpet. Just follow the directions on the bottle and it works great!

Test it first on a tiny spot before doing a big spot, but Woolite OxyDeep has worked great for me in getting throw-up stains out.
