Well, my poodle chihuahua just turned one. When he was about 2 or 3 months old, he started doing this: I took him to the vet and they told me it was allergies. I have been giving him the children's benydryl since then because she recommended it. When he gets excited or quickly scared, its like his throat locks up and he can't breath, he struggles to breath like when you cry hard and can't catch your breath and makes a crazy noise from his nose. He tries not to move, he lays flat on the floor or runs to me, and gets stiff. I think my vet is full of crap and I don't know how to explain the symptoms well, but does anyone know what it might be?

your dog is having an allergic reaction to the medicine and you need to stop giving it to him and take him to another vet. just like people dogs can be very sensitive to different kinds of medication

It sounds to me like the dog is doing a "reverse sneeze." One of my border collies does this, but not that often. She mostly did it when I first rescued her and she had a respiratory infection - the first time I saw her do it I thought she was going to die. How often is your dog doing this? Is it a once in a while thing or daily? I wouldn't personally be comfortable giving my dog benadryl every single day but benadryl is safe to give to dogs at the dosage your vet recommends. I don't think your vet is wrong, but I would want other options.

You could try to reduce the dog's exposure to airborne allergens by washing it more often if you aren't already bathing it on a regular basis (the dog's coat can trap allergens and increase exposure). I would try to figure out what triggers the sneezing and reduce the dog's exposure to that.

Try a different vet, stop the benedyl, & probably you need a different food vets have prescription food for allergies made just for this get the dog blood work done & even try a holistic pet vet.
My dog has allergies I swiched foods, gave flax seed oil & pet vitamins, stopped benadrly gave him haircut he's 9 yrs. old min. schnuazer & has more energy than a pup. I'ts probably the food (recall now) they use alot of by products, & wheat in cheap food not good for dogs they are carnivours

There is more than 1 vet out there or better yet take him to a collage like Ohio State where they have a great vet school(also cheaper ) to find out what is wrong. That one is not one to guess on and over the counter meds may make it worse.
