You may be able to get "in transit" plates from TN. BEFORE you pick up the car, get the VIN & call your insurance & have it added to your policy. It is NOT legal to take plates off one car & just put them on another without TRANSFERRING them through the DMV. In some states, you have to show PROOF that the 1st car was sold before you put the plates on the 2nd car. If you do not want to get the in transit plates or insure it, you should TOW it. If something happened on the way you can be in a HEAP of trouble for driving with no plates & no insurance. Even if nothing happens, it is illegal to drive without plates so you will get pulled over & ticketed if you are even seen by a police officer. You will not need to be doing anything else wrong.

Sorry, you can't drive a vehicle without plates and insurance. You can probably get a temporary moving permit in lieu of plates to get it to Illinois, but do NOT drive it without insurance. If you're buying from a dealer, he should be able to get you a 30 day "paper' plate. If from a private party, you will have to hit the local DMV office. As to insurance, call your agent and have him cover you and fax you proof of insurance.
The other option is to trailer it home.

You need to go to the Ill DMV explain the situation and see if a temp tag can be issued.
Or talk to the owner and explain that the car as long as it is registered in his name his tags need to stay on it. Once you arrive in Ill. get it registered in your name and send him the tags back.
I do believe that all insurance companies have a clause for a new car purchase or used car. that says you are covered for XX days or hours. Check with your agent.

If you have an existing car take the plates off of that car and put them on the new one. Otherwise just make sure you have a signed title and if you get pulled over just explain that you just purchased the car. They might give a ticket but all you will do to get out of it will be to send them a copy of your registration once you have it completed. Also make sure you don't have any drugs.

You will purchase a trip permit from the DMV, that will get you to Illonis, but you need to register/title it as soon as possible, because the permit is usually only good for three days.

ok, in case you obtain a minivan from a dealership, they might desire to have registered the motor vehicle for you and placed on the recent plates. the sole way they does not do this, is that in case you meant to bypass to a distinctive state to sign up the minivan. wherein case they might have given you temporary plates. do not placed plates from yet another motor vehicle in this new one, you may nicely be pulled over, given tickets and doubtless having the plates confiscated for incorrect use. And specific you will get pulled over in case you have not have been given plates (temporary or in any different case) on a sparkling automobile. the sole different suggestion is that if the dealership, will loan you broking license plates to get from the dealership to the inspection station (yet they might desire to've inspected the motor vehicle for you besides) and then to DMV.
