Why is it that if i fill up a glass with water for myself and put it on the floor my cat will drink from it, but if i fill a glass up for him so he won't drink mine, he's not interested. He also prefers to drink from the tap in the bath than from his own water bowl, which is changed every day? Is he deranged? I think its funny but can't figure out why he does it.

Cats perfer running water to water in the bowl. It goes back to primal instincts, when big cats ldrank from rivers and such. Most cats always perfer running water and it is fresher. You can find water fountains that filter the water and keep it fresh for the cats at the pet store.

Also cats will drink from puddles and places that we think are dirty before they drink from their own bowl. This is usually because the water we get from the tap is full of added minerals and flouride that the cats can smell and taste. Natural water found outside doesn't contain additives, even though it looks nasty to us.

Hope this helps!

I recently posted a funny question about my cat and was surprised how many other cats do the same thing! He will never drink from his water bowl so we have to leave water in the sink and the toilet seat down so he can get in there. He has a water bowl in the garden that we fill up for him too. I have no idea why he does it, but that's what makes him so loveable!

AS already mentioned cats in general do not like static water. Hence the reason they go in the sink or basin because they have seen when you put the tap on and the water flows. I know they will drink from a dirty puddle - because it is rainwater - but does not taste like tap water does when it is left in a bowl. My cat loves the water fountain and spends a lot of time drinking and watching the cool filtered water (which has lost the taste of minerals from the tap). She still likes to follow me when I've cleaned my teeth and jumps into the basin to stare down the plughole!!

a lot of cats like their water fresh. I asked my vet the same question cuz my cat wasn't taking in enough water and would drink from the tap like he has never drank before. My vet said that I need to change the water more than once or more than even twice a day. Your cat is just really picky, that's all. I now change mine a lot, but he still prefers straight from the tap.

He's a cat!! My cat always jumps up on the coffee table and sticks his head into what ever cups or glasses are there!

When Im in the bath he sticks a paw in first as if to test it, shakes it off quickly so that he gets water in my eyes and then leans over and drinks it! Nice

With is water bowl he sticks his paw in it and pulls it around the kitchen for a bit. Then he digs his claws into the floor and drinks it. He acts as if he is stopping himself from falling into this inch deep bowl of water!!!

His new one is to sit at the end of the bath when I am in the shower and huff and puff if I accidently get some water on him

Hey! my cat is exactly the same - he never drinks from his water bowl but i have woken in the night to find him slurping away at my glass of water i take to bed - hmm wonder how long hes been doing that before i realised - nice! if i fill a glass and put it down, he drinks, and he drinks from puddles and plant pots outside.

i read that apparently, cats prefer rain water as it doesnt taste of chemicals like tap water sometime does. But i dont get why he likes to dirnk out of my glass!

Hi, No your cat is not crazy, i think all cat's do this, they will find a puddle or drink out of a tap, it's just their way.I have to put a bowl of water at the side of the fireplace for my cat, i had to buy a posh bowl and he loves really cold water.

The grass is always greener...the water is always fresher...

If you want him to drink from his dish get him a cat water fountain. It keeps the water moving so it tastes fresher (since it's being aerated) and it stays cold longer. Of course if you don't mind leaving the tap on low in the bathroom you could save about $25 by not buying the fountain, but that's a huge waste of water, which you could be paying for anyway.

Cats like people also have there personal habits..Perhaps he just likes to think he is a human instead of a cat.I had a cat that loves to lay in the bathroom sink with the water drizzling on him and he would clean himself.I guess he thought he was taking a bath.

it;s like this the grass is always greener on the other side.so in other words your water is better as it;s yours .. that is a bit odd. but cats are very intelligent creatures and they have their own ways of doing things 'and yours prefers to drink water like you do...i see cats dip their paws in water to test it then the;ll drink it once it;s deemed safe...my cat loves to go around all the food and water dishes and cover the food with a piece of tissue paper or a shirt or anything that she can life and carry,,,,your cat is just being her little self and she likes to be more like you.....LOL
