I have been getting those pains just randomly - I do administrative work and I'm guessing it's got to either be arthritic or carpal tunnel. The exercises I do to help is to take one hand and put it over my fingers and slowly stretch them back, and hold for a few seconds. It helps just a little bit, but most likely, that's where you're headed also. Try avoiding having your hands in the cold then hot temps (dishes, weather, etc) and just continue stretching until you go to the doc's and really find out what it is.

Most likely reason is RSI (repetitive strain injury) this is caused by constantly using the same actions ( ie typing or shovelling) and is very common.
About all you can do is take painkillers and wear a support and try to rest it as much as possible.
I used to have a lot of trouble with it in my elbows ( from mucking out stables) and that is what the doctor told me, he also gave me ibuprofen.
You could try to notice the way that you do things and see if they are changeable in order to reduce the strain.
If it is caused by something you do at work it is classed as an industrial injury but I don't know if you would be able to make a claim for it.
Good luck

You could have nerve damage that can cause carpal tunnel syndrome or tendinitis. You should get an X-Ray by your primary physician or chiropractor to check it out. These conditions can be treated but very difficult to cure all of the way. Put ice on it in the mean time to stop any inflammation 2-3x per day with 15-20min sessions.

If you are having these symptoms:
weakness in one or both hands
numbness or tingling in the thumb and next two or three fingers of one or both hands
numbness or tingling of the palm of the hand
wrist or hand pain in one or both hands
pain extending to the elbow
impaired fine finger movements (coordination) in one or both hands
weak grip or difficulty carrying bags (a common complaint)
atrophy of the muscular bulge under the thumb (in advanced or chronic cases)
Then it is carpal tunnel syndrome which is mainly cause by typing.

you extremely would desire to get this regarded at by ability of a physician. The ice-cream scooping is annoying an underlying subject which should be clinically determined. you're able to prefer a momentary splint or relax or physiotherapy or a mixture of the three.
