Hi. I have a piece of furniture (an armoire wall unit) that is stained a medium oak color. The piece is solid wood (oak) and contains no MDF. I am thinking of restaining this a lighter honey oak color. What is the best way to go about this? Do I strip it? Sand it? Since I want to go lighter, I figure I have to do some priming before I restain. Any suggestions are apprciated!

you can use a stripper but sanding will get you the desired effect without the mess do not primer it just keep sanding until you get past the stain as for what the other guy said about the sealer we never seal until after we stain and we do that to raise the grain of the wood then it gets lightly sanded 220 grit paper before we laquer or poly it

You will need to strip off any sealer (poly, shellac, varnish) and then sand it. If the stain on it now has soaked deeply into the wood, it may take a lot of sanding. Not sure what you mean by "priming". Priming is used for painting. A wood sealer may have been used before the original stain to retard the grain from showing up too much.
