I have a Bible...It was badly damaged in a move...how would I dispose of it so I can buy a new one, without feeling guilty?

Dispose of it as you would any other book. Recycle the paper if you can. It's *how* the Bible is used and treated when it is working that matters most.

A lot of what people have been saying is right. The Word of God is living and effective... really the Word of God is Jesus.

You could put it in the trash can without feeling bad. But if you feel that would be disrespectful, then build a nice fire and burn it out of respect.

Remember, burning something is also a sign of respect and not just of hatred. When Boy Scouts get rid of old and worn US flags, they burn them in a flag burning ceremony.

You could treat this old bible with the same respect if you want.

Another option would be to burry the old bible in the yard, commending it to God. I'm serious. The two ways that Christians dispose of holy items have traditionally been burning them or burrying them.

Also, ask God for help in understanding want you should do and whether you should feel bad for throwing an old bible away.

I looked around the internet for the answer to this question.

"The real question is whether or not the Bible is blessed. If it is blessed you should usually burn it. If it is not blessed, you can throw it away. I know, I know…that sounds really sacrilegious, but I even checked with two priests and a Bishop on this one several years ago, when one of my Bibles was falling apart.

If you don’t like either of those options, you can always give it away, or bury it (which is what I had done)…imagine how freaked out someone might be someday, years from now, long after you are gone, to unearth a Bible in their backyard. They’d probably consider it a sign from God, be on the news, and start an entire religion. Don’t believe me? Things like that have happened in the past.

Personally, I'd save unsuspecting archeologists in future generations the confusion and energy…burn it, it is completely appropriate to do so."

You can either give it to the Goodwill or something...they'll dispose of it if it's too damaged to sell. Don't feel guilty if it's so damaged that you have to throw it away. I know some people feel uncomfortable with doing that, though. I heard that some people actually bury their own religious texts that are damaged because they don't have the heart to throw them away.

I'd just give it to a second hand store that sells books...and get you a new one. God knows your heart.

Personally, I like to keep my Bibles, even if they are badly damaged. You can put it in a box, store it under your bed, and forget about it. A Bible is a precious thing that men have died to defend and to throw it away seems a bit cruel to me. Just buy a new Bible and store this one away.

There is a good source of information for you, someone who did the research--How to dispose of a Bible--the best way seems to bury it after the blessings recited by your priest/minister/rabbi/elder,or guru.

Do you feel guilty disposing of any other kind of reading material? Dispose of it as you would any other old, useless textbook!

You could burn it. The bible itself is not sacred. However the message it contains is sacred. Don't worry too much about how you dispose of it as long as you keep its message in your heart.

If it makes you feel bad, then just keep it as a keepsake. Consider though, that God's word is eternal, and is more than just paper and leather; I don't think he would reject your salvation card just for throwing away a tattered copy...more important that you read the one you have.
