If your son is getting thinner his pediatrician should do some testing on his stool and blood or send you to a specialist.

My son pooped a lot until he was like 3 and i mean like 7 pampers in one day when he was around 2 until 3. when baby he used like 10 a day. Give him more fiber in his diet and see if anything changes in his system. My son was born 6lbs but by 3 he was 45 lbs. He is perfectly fine. Depending what he eats he get diarrhea or constipated.

Try to change his diet, if not change his pediatrician and go somewhere else to see if thet check your son. Kids at that age start stretching ,but loosing weight its not a good sign. My son nutritionist said a kid shouldnt be loosing weight unless he is ill. Good luck!

Does he have a colon or intestinal problem? The only thing that comes to mind is really quick metabolism. Has he had tests to figure out why he goes so much? By now, he should have all of his teeth?? Otherwise, as I am sure that you know, a lot of bowel movements are usually a sign of teething. He, too, could be going through a growth spurt right now so he's eating more and therefore pooping more. Sorry....wish I had a better answer for you. Keep plugging away at your pediatrician to find an answer!!

How much does he weigh now? I have a very lean and tall 3 1/2 year old that can still wear some of her 2ts and is healthy. So, do now worry about clothes size.

As for the bowel issue - this is a concern. Large stools can be a type of constipation. I learned this with my 2 yr son. If it's just constipation adding more water to his day would help greatly. But passing 6 times a day seems excessive.

Have the doctors ruled out a milk allergy (lactose intolerant)? From the rest it sounds like he could have Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). The "fun" (heavy sarcasm here) with IBS is that you have to rule a bunch of other things out first.

Here is a link to a description of IBS:
http://www.medicinenet.com/irritable_bowel_syndrome/article.htm

And since IBS is difficult to diagnose to do research the following criteria has been set to identify IBS:
"The Rome II Criteria state that in order to be diagnosed with IBS, a patient should have suffered abdominal pain or discomfort for 12 weeks or more (not necessarily consecutive weeks) in the previous 12 months. The pain or discomfort should have two out of the three following features:

Relief with defecation
Onset associated with a change in the frequency of stool
Onset associated with a change in the form of stool

Other symptoms that are not essential, but support a diagnosis of IBS, are: (1) abnormal frequency of stools (more than 3/day or less than 3/week); (2) abnormal stool form (lumpy and hard, or loose and watery); (3) abnormal stool passage (straining, urgency, or feeling of incomplete evacuation); (4) passage of mucus; and (5) bloating (feeling of abdominal distention, or enlargement)."

Take care!
