In the Bible the term "self-control" means "holding oneself in", or a kind of "inner strength."

There are a couple of reasons why God thinks it is important for us to have self-control.

Self-control defends us against temptation and destruction. In Proverbs 25:28 it says "A person without self-control is like a city with broken down walls." In this day, walls were used as protection, so this verse basically means that a person without self control does not have any walls of protection. Why are those walls of protection so important? Because God wants us to protect something that has value, and that something is our life!

God also tells us that self-control leads to godliness and love (2 Peter 1:5-7).

Hope this helps!

In Christ,

Well, self control is a God given mechanism that basically keeps us out of trouble. It's a very practical tool in that it helps keep us away from situations that can be problematic and become detrimental to our well being. We are all aware that, for example, too much food, alcohol, drugs, gambling and sex can lead to health problems, addictions, broken hearts and families etc. Too much of anything is not good for us; moderation and self control are the key to living a long, healthy and happy life.

Why you ask?

Think if no man in the world had self-control.

We would hump everything in sight. :)

So why is maintaining self-control so important? .. Common sense, If everyone doesn't maintain self-control there would be worldwide anarchy and mayhem. If one person doesn't, they do something dumb and illegal and get sent to jail eventually.

Self-control is essential in civilized society. In order for things to work, each individual must at least try to balance his needs and wants against those of others. Civilization is always give and take.
