AKC reconizes 23 breeds of hound plus 5 more cooon hound breeds in the apendix - and there are MANY more not reconized by the AKC (often due to low numbers in US)
Hounds are those bred to hunt furred game and are subdivided into 2 groups the sent hounds (such as the beagle & bloodhound) that are bred to trail game by sent and the sighthounds (afgan, greyhound) who were bred to run it down by sight . The two types are sometimes used togher (the tradional fox hunt cry of "tally Ho" on sighting the fox was origanally a signal to release the leased sighthounds). The canadates for oldest breeds (the saluki and pharoh hound) are both sighthounds and date back at least 6,000 years before christ - before the bow and arrow so they were virtually the only way to obtain game for dinner.
Nowday they are mostly pets - and can be quite loving, however they don't live to do as the master commands being a tad independent. One should also keep in mind a sent hound WILL follow his nose and a sighthound has a "if it moves I chase" reflex...

The oldest breed is the sighthound, which is the only dog mentioned in the bible
Because they are independent hunters they were able to bring down game for man without mans assistance or need of a weapon and they were fast enough to catch an kill other animals
