As long as they are keeped cool and keep in a place that doesn't have alot of dust they should be fine. Most of the time standing them up is the best but if for instance you have a entertainment stand and drawers for VHS tapes then lying thm down is not a problem. The only thing that I would suggest is not to have them stacked for any long period of time this my cause the tapes to crack under pressure.
Remember keep out of sun and away from heat and dust boxes regularly since dust can be the enemy of VHS tapes.
If you are really concerned copy to DVD.

It dosent matter as long as their kept in a dry area and away from heat where they would melt. The way they lay doesnt matter unless your going to be stacking them for some odd reason then stand them upright so they can support weight. I've had VHS laying around my house for years in cases and just open and they still work great.
