As a South African you are not simply allowed to live in Australia.
You may apply for a holiday visa which is valid for 3 months, providing you purchase a return ticket (to South Africa) and have sufficient funds and accommodation for your stay, once time is up you must be out.

The alternative is to try for residency or a work permit through the department of immigration; most routes are skill based.
