I live in Wisconsin; I have cash in hand to pay full amount to a private party for a car. What do I do to take care of the title and registration and anything else that needs to be taken care of? Also, how should I make a record of the purchase if it's in cash?

1. Make sure you have that car checked out by a mechanic you feel comfortable with.
2. Ask the seller straight out to please let you know what is wrong with the car so that you can get it fixed. Have him or her put it in writing.
3. Make sure to have to full cost of the car you are buying and what is included in it, in writing as well.
4. Once you have the bill of sale, then you can register and insure your car.

Test drive, and or have amechanic inspect the car yo uwish to buy in order to detect any issues with it. Obtain a "Bill of Sale" from the seller. It is your recepit. Obtain the Title from the seller. Got to the DMV and pay registration and taxes. The DMV will take the old title from you and issue you a new one in your name. Wallah!

Write up a simple bill of sale including make, model & VIN number - mileage and agreed upon price. Both you and the seller should sign the bill of sale as a receipt.

The Title will have an area on the back to fill out for tranfer of Title. Follow the instructions on it - they should be pretty straight forward. If you have any questions you can contact your Secretary of State's office.
