About 6 months ago I fell on the garage floor and was unconscious. After the surgery, I started having difficulty with short-term memory and have a problems with finding words when I speak. In addition, I am totally lethargic, highly fatigued, and sleep day and night most days. I also have mild apnea, but I do manage to make time to scarve up two plates of food and go to the bathroom. It is so frustrating and at times it makes me angry. I am not the same, energetic, animated, and fun person. Don't get me wrong, but I have wonderful neurologists and a supportive family, and two dogs who like me are getting to be chubby bunnies and all they want to do is cuddle with me. Although, my doctors say it takes time, I'm just wondering if anyone has the same experience.

You are fortunate to have recovered as well as you have after a brain injury. The residual effects you are experiencing may be due to neuronal shearing from the impact, rather than the result of the hematomas. Yes, it will take time to reduce the problems with short-term memory and word-finding. All of your symptoms are typical for the type of injury you describe, including the fatigue. It may take up to a year for your symptoms to resolve.
In the mean time, you can compensate for the memory loss by having a few small notebooks around the house; one next to the phone (so others get their messages), one next to your bed, one by the TV, and one for your pocket. Write down anything you want to remember so it will be there for you, your family, and your MDs to review.
My patients with anomia (word-finding problems) found it helpful to run through the alphabet silently in order to retrieve a word. For example, if you cannot access the name of an animal, run through " A, B, C , D, oh yeah, Dog". It really takes no time at all, and you'd be surprised how well it works.
