Report the breeder to someone for selling it to you without any knowledge of the breed.

I have 2 rescue Danes, so I can't speak to your price question, but I can tell you a little something about my babies.

#1. They think they are people. They do not like to sleep outdoors or even really hang out there. They like to be inside wherever you are.
#2. They are not as clumsy as you would think. My Danes have never knocked anything over, and they have full tails and ears (not docked). They are very aware of their surroundings, even when the two of them are wrestling.
#3. They will love you like nothing you've ever experienced. I've had dogs my whole life, and my two Danes are the most affectionate, sympathetic, and caring dogs I've ever met. Crying during a movie? They'll lick your tears. Had a bad day? They'll curl up next to you on the couch with a big sigh.

As mentioned by someone else, you should definitely take them to some kind of training (we did a PetsMart class) because if you don't teach them how to walk on a leash, they will dislocate your shoulder. I'm speaking from experience.

Congratulations on your new baby!!!!

Yes, there is a LOT you need to know! Firstly, NEVER feed puppy food to a Great Dane! Feed a high quality adult food - check the label - meat should be the first ingredient, not corn, not grains, not by-products.

Enrol in obedience class immediately - you need to have control over a dog that is going to be over 130 lbs. He won't be full grown until he is 3 years old. Male Danes tend to go through a "teenage phase" from 6 months to 12 months or so, you need to get him socialized with both people and other dogs. Have him neutered, it will calm him down and helps to prevent certain types of cancer.

And read everything you can get on Danes. I can't believe a breeder would let a Dane go to someone who has no knowledge of the breed.

great Danes are very reliable condominium canines. we've consistently had small residences and consistently had Danes. relatively, the small canines might desire to be walked and excersized daily and in case you're actually not assembly those standards then a Dane should not be ok the two. in any different case, a Dane desires indoor time. in spite of the climate, if the climate became seventy two wide-unfold....the canines desires to be with you for kinfolk time. i don't at present have a Dane, I actually have a beagle and a rat terrier. Neither of them gets what they deserve and the beagle is getting fat. this is undesirable yet not as undesirable as though i became letting a Dane get so under pressure and out of shape. certainly, in case you could supply the canines some exersize then the size is not any count. i don't in basic terms like the fast 8-12 year lifespan of a great dane. i'm not waiting to declare so long yet. it is why a beagle appealed to me plenty. She'll stay slightly longer.

Actually here in CT. you can't touch a Dane for under $1,000.00. So you have a great dog at a very good price.
Danes are big babies. They love people and are usually very easy to train, sometime they can be a bit stubborn and they don't know how big they are. If allowed they will take over a couch.
Danes are considered a giant breed dog so get the right food for him and plenty of clean water. I have also heard different opinions on raised feeder for these dogs so you should ask your vet about that
My sister rescued a Dane and she was the sweetest dog ever.

No way to know without seeing the pup and looking at the bloodlines.
As for feeding, do not feed a puppy chow! Dane pups should not be given a protein level over 23%. You don't want fast growth in a dane. The weight becomes too much for his developing bones to handle; could cause any number of problems. An adult food is the same as a large breed puppy food, so don't waste your money.
As for the protein levels,, check the net and verify what I am telling you.

Hey There- congratulations on your puppy!! I have worked for a Great Dane Rescue for years and they have been a wealth of knowledge. Being owned by a great dane is a unique and rewarding experience and if they are raised and trained in a responsible manner, they are the best dogs in the world! Please please please train your puppy, use a gentle leader, feed Eagle Pack(or other natural food), take to the vet regularly, brush their teeth, and do your research!! Websites such as Ginnie.com, leans and slobbers.com, greatdanelady.com are great ways to learn more about your new addition. Also be especially aware of the symptoms of Bloat!!

Hint: For comfort, buy a plant stand (you can get one from Wal-Mart or Target) and then walk that plant stand over to the pet food aisle and find a dog food bowl that fits inside...there you have a pretty pet food dish that the dog doesn't have to bend down to eat out of....all my danes use them!!

That is usually how much purebred papered Danes cost, give or take a hundred. But the time for researching a particular breed is BEFORE you get one, not after. I hope this will be a dog you can live with...for it's sake.

Without seeing the pup and knowing his bloodlines, no one can tell you whether $800 is too much or too little. If both of the pups parents won Westminster Dog Show the past two years, then you got a steal, but if you bought the dog from a puppy miller you got robbed.

To late to ask if its a good buy.You should have researched the breed first. Dane's are wonderful dogs but usually have a short life span. They are prone to certain genetic problems also.

Figure an ear cropping runs $250 in some areas, and $400 here in FL......so basically you got a $400- $550 pup...... then there's the microchip & shots...... so.......ya got a $300-$400 pup. And the breeder allowed it to go to a home with no knowledge of the breed..... parents health.....OFA? CARDIO? THYROID?
