I had the same problem, my fatherinlaw lives across the street and if you contact the Post Office, they will send him a letter stipulating that it's a Felony to take your mail, opening and not returning to you is the same as tampering.Mail Fraud is when you open and do what is an Idenity theft. The Post Office, also has stickers you put on your mail box that says it is a Felony to open your mail box.If your fatherinlaw doesn't get the hint, sad to say but you might need to look into a Post Office Box. They don't costs much , but is an inconvience for you.

Sometimes my parents and I get random packages in the mail. Maybe that's what he thought it was and just decided to wait to open it. Ask him about it, and while your at it, mention to him that when he intercepts your mail if he could, say, put it on your dresser that you would appreciate it. You and your parents share the same mail box. So whomever gets the mail is technically intercepting everyone else's mail too. They could just get mixed up. Try to work out a way you can make sure the mail is separated before it disappears into the trash or your parents' bedroom. Maybe they could leave the mail on the counter and you can get yours when you come home.

this is complete mail fraud. Unless he is the intended mail recipient, or you have given him permission, this is completely illegal. This is personal and confidential mail that belongs only to you. Some mail may say to you or postal customer and this is usually junk mail.

If you are having a real problem with this i would suggest finding your nearest post office and renting out a small P.O. box and having your mail sent there so that only your junk mail goes to your house. A P.O. box would run about $40 for 6 months of use. Good luck!!

How is he getting access to your mail?

If he is taking it out of your mail box, that is a FEDERAL offense punishable by up to 10 years in Federal prison.

However, I doubt that you want to report your husband's father to the authorities. So buy a new mail box with a mail slot and a lock on it. The mail carrier puts the mail in the slot and you open it with the key. That will solve the problem.

First it is theft. Second it is a federal offense to open any postal mail not in the receivers name. The inside container of a mail compartment falls under the jurisdiction of the Federal Government. Contact the Post Inspector General he or she is required to conduct investigations into such matters.

That is tampering with other's mail, and it is a federal offense. If you report it to the postal inspectors, he can be put away for a long time.

I can tell you from experience that stealing mail is a Federal offense and the postal authorities will prosecute him if you call them. You contact them by going to the post office.
