John Lennon said It's not a new message: "Give Peace a Chance" — we're not being unreasonable, just saying, "Give it a chance." With "Imagine," we're saying, "Can you imagine a world without countries or religions?" It's the same message over and over. And it's positive.[5]
Yoko Ono said that the lyrical content of "Imagine" was " just what John believed — that we are all one country, one world, one people. He wanted to get that idea out."[6]

It was/is and anti war song (remember the Vietnam war was going on back in 1971) but he crammed a lot of other "peace", anti-religion, and do good messages in there too.
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

His message is see past differences, realize that yes we arent all the same, but communism needs to go away. And dont forget to light the bowl and share it with your neighbor? I dont know thats what I got off of it.
Personally I think that if pot was legalized. We would all be peaceful. I think that our fellow world leaders get off on fighting. O well. C'est la Vie

I thought it was pretty straight forward- it was about loving your fellow man regardless of any differences you have isn't it? I think I'm thinking of the right song here- the one that's like "imagine all the people" yeah

It was one of my favorite songs before I came to believe in God. Who wouldn't like such a sweet, hopeful song?
The grim reality is that, even if God doesn't exist (which He does), humanity can never live in the Utopian world Lennon wrote about. We're much too selfish and cruel to stop being selfish and cruel.

Imagine abandoning all the petty crap that we think defines us- and start defining ourselves by what we can do as one world, one race.
Maynard James Keenan did a really good update of this song!

Chloe is so right in her answer. Lennon was a talented musician but a mess in his personal life. Cheated on his first wife Cynthia, divorced her to marry his lover Yoko, cheated on Yoko, abandoned and basically ignored his first son Julian.

Maybe he was imagining an ideal world of peace better than the world he lives in...

I dislike that song with a passion. Everytime it comes on the radio I tune to a different station. Why imagine all those things, they won't happen.
