I have a 4 year old male pit/shepard mix - He has developed a case of diariah. I am giving him cooked rice w/egg in it, and pepto-bismal. Is there anything else I can do? Today (3/20/07) will be the 3rd day that he has had this.

His dog food is not on the list for the recall. I checked into that first.
The last time this happened (3 years ago) I was told pepto would be ok for him. I only just gave him that this morning.
Are there any other home remedies other than the rice mixture?

Pure Pumpkin in a can. It is in the same aisle as pumpkin pie filling--but make sure that you get PURE PUMPKIN--depending on the size of your dog--2 tablespoons mixed with rice. You dont have to heat the pumpkin--just right out of the can, and mix it with some cooked white rice. It does an amazing job on loose poop, and it is good for them too. Keep a few cans on hand for the next time. You will be surprised how well it works. Good Luck.

Hi, In the May issue of Dog Fancy on pg. 61 there is a natural tip for dogs with diarrhea it says that "pureed pumpkin is an incredibly effective anti-diahrreal, and you should have a couple cans on hand just in case. Not the "PUMPKIN-PIE MIX" which has sugar and spices--you want plain pumkin. Add a teaspoon or two of fiber rich pumkin to his food or feeding it straight from the can--most dogs love it-- can soon bring the runs to a stand still. Also try on the herbal front, slippery-elm. It is a tried and true remedy for soothing the digestive tract. It is available as a tincture and aside from rare alergic reactions it is considered to be safe for use in animals." Quote from the issue of Dog Fancy listed above. Also ginger has stomach settling properties...see link below.

I would take it to the vet now call them they will help you further, three days is to much. If you are feeding your dog canned or pouched dog food previously. definitely go to the vet. The rice and eggs are a great idea so is the pepto-bismal. This is what my vet told me t give a sick dog.

Unless your vet told you to give your dog Pepto-Bismal I would stop that right now.
You need to call your vet 3 days is too long for your dog to be having the runs.

After 3 days of diariah you should be thinking of having a vet look at him. He could have something more serious than just a case of diariah.Maybe even parvo...Has he had all his shots? He could dehydrate if it keeps up. Love him, take him to vet.

I wouldn't give him pepto, but I would give him pedialyte to keep him from dehydrating. Also rice w/hamburger. But really you should try to get your pet to the vet. It might just be a viral infection but on the other hand it may be more serious

You need to take him to the vet. Also i heard you should give them gatorade so the dog doesnt dehydrate for all the fluid the dog is disposing.

sometimes my dogs will get into something they shouldn't (like my cat's food) and get runny poop. I just stop feeding them until they stop having diarrhea. I give them small amounts of water too. And make them stay outside in the yard because they will just poo in the house by accident. They are both house trained it's just if they get runny poop they can't help it. The runny poop goes away after like 2 days.

I wouldn't give him anything like that. I've been told that pumpkin pulp is good for both diarrhea and constipation. That's what we use for our little Maxx and it seems to work well. Good Luck!
