For an average built adult it is 6-8 glasses a day ,easy enough to remember, without going into calculations, which of course will be more specific. The quantity will depend a lot on the weather, hot dry weather will cause a lot of loss of body fluid by perspiration ,consequently excessive thirst & more intake of water, nature's way of adjusting water in-take.

Here is an easy formula you can use for life:
Take your body weight and divide that number in half.
That new number is the number of ounces of water you should drink on a daily basis.
For instance, my weight at 180 = nearly three quarts of water per day. (180 /2 = 90oz <> 98oz.= 3 quarts

"...He concluded that someone misinformed has been telling people to drink large amounts of water when most do not need to."
"[healthy adults in a temperate climate ] can just drink enough to slake thirst — and this includes coffee, tea, and even beer — despite their diuretic effects."
Did you ever notice that a lot of mainstream medical advice seems to change after a few years? Oops that is a question, not an answer. :)
Cheers!

I concur with Clarkie. That's what I learned too, body weight divided in 1/2 and that's the water we should drink every day.
