Then digging occurs mostly during the day while I'm at work. So I can't catch him in the act...

Any suggestions?

Put a fence around your yard...
Setup a favorable digging spot/corner...
Put things that your dog hates to touch or go near (because of smell or whatever) across your yard.

Oh, and just found this site, please have a look :)

I don't know if this will work for you but it worked for me with my lab.

When my lab would dig a hold I would mix some fish gravel in with the dirt she had dug up. For some reason she didn't like the feel of the fish gravel and wouldn't dig at that spot anymore. It took some time - and a few holes - but she finally stopped digging.

Have you ever heard of a soft air gun? Well they shoot plastic BBS. You can get a soft air gun of lower quality and and that's less powerful. When ur dog goes to dig aim and shoot him in the butt (not standing 2 close). This is guarantied 2 work and i have trained dogs like this before. Your dog will get the message before long but u have 2 shoot when he is just getting ready 2 dig. GOOD LUCK!

Try spreading moth balls or moth crystals around the area the dog likes to dig in...
