First of all, the point was not to "fix" us all so we'd never make a wrong choice...it was to give us free agency to choose for ourselves. And because of that, we are free to decide for ourselves what we believe and how we act (or don't act) upon those beliefs.
Secondly, were it not for Eve eating the apple (not that it was any less of a sin on her part), none of us would be here. That also was not the plan.
Finally, someone questioned why the possibility would be put there in the first place if they weren't supposed to eat the fruit. The answer is because in order for Adam and Eve to have the right to choose to be obedient, there had to be something for them to choose between good and evil. Otherwise, it'd be like saying, "I have this basket full of oranges, and only oranges. But you are not allowed to take an apple out of this basket."
And by the way, Jesus' Atonement "fixed" the problem by also giving us the option to repent. Again...free agency.

Because of free will.Eve had a choice. To follow God or disobey him.She disobeyed. When God created man and woman he gave all authority over the world. Therefore when Eve sinned she gave authority over Earth to Satan. Now Eve worked for Satan. She helped him.God is perfect. He cannot look at sin. That was before Jesus death so God could not forgive her.He couldn't help someone that would help sin.And he put the tree there because of free will.He gave her a choice.

He knew is was going to happen from all eternity. It was part of his plan of redemption. His word says that "Christ was crucified from the foundation of the world." it was already his plan to come and die for fallen man, even before he created the first star in the heavens.
If you are going to ask why, it is a little thing called freewill. He does not want to force us to obey him. He could have created mindless drones that worship him non-stop. He did not want that. That is not love. He wants us to make a conscience decision to choose him.
cullentoon, your comprehension of the bible is very poor. Jesus was there in the garden of Eden. As the pre-incarnate eternally begotten Son of God.

"What was it that Adam ate that he wasn't supposed to eat? It wasn't just an apple. It was the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The subtle message? 'Get smart and I'll f*** you over' sayeth the Lord. God is the smartest, and he doesn't want any Competition. Is this not an absolutely anti-intellectual religion?"

He did. Right there in Genesis 3, within seconds of it happening, God restore Eve to fellowship with him, and promised that through her the solution for all future generations would come. That her seed would be the one to bruise the serpents head.
However at that time, the same as at the time of the crucifixion, and the same as today, each person has to decide to accept that salvation before it makes a difference in them.

Jesus was not born as yet. You must mean Adam, for he was the only male around Eve in the Garden of Eden, and Eve didn't get sick from the apple!
Your memory of the Bible is very poor.

I'd rather answer one of the answers.
"I don't question it...I just believe it to be true."
The "Christian," armored with complacency and willed ignorance, is absolutely invulnerable to criticism. Questions like yours simply don't make a dent.
"And besides, Jesus did fix the sin problem with His death, burial & resurrection nearly 2000 years ago."
Indeed. The "rebellion" of man against the all-powerful, all-knowing God, who obviously created him specifically TO rebel, was just the excuse for condemning man in order to set the stage for the grotesquely tragic farce of the Atonement. God, Christ-stains are hilarious.

When God created Adam and Eve he created them sinless, but gave them the free will to choose not to eat the forbidden fruit. They used that free will to decide to eat the fruit. God doesn't interfere with free will. We all have the free will to make decisions, from everything like what we will have for dinner, what mate we will choose to spend our life with, and even whether or not we will accept God's gift of salvation. God cannot MAKE us make those decisions, he gives us the gift of free will so that we can make them ourselves.
So that's why he didn't stop them.
Hope this helps!

He created them with free will. Eve chose to eat the apple after she was told not to. She had a choice, she chose to believe the snake over God himself. If she hadn't, we'd all be worshipping one God.

He banished them from the Garden of Eden.
He did this because they may eat from the tree of life and become as gods, meaning live for ever.Although they ate from the tree of knowledge they had not the wisdom to use it. Had they eaten from the tree of life they would live for ever and with time they would have gained knowledge and wisdom.
