As most moderate Americans, I understand both sides of the immigration debate. What I do not understand is this . . . For those of you who are apposed to amnesty how do you think we should pay for our entitlement programs given the US population deficit. This economic issue is what keeps me on the fence. Without a population surge, how does the the USA maintain its current spending without raising taxes or do we across the board cut spending to compensate. Or do we just reduce benefits the millions of people that are about to retire. Or how do we maintain our military budget and pay down the deficit without increasing the number of tax payers.

Oh, that one is easy. The illegal immigrants, for the most part, aren't the kind of immigrants that pay into services more than they use, they are the kind that are too poor to pay taxes to cover even as much as their families use. Then they send huge amounts of money back to Latin American countries , hurting our balance of trade as well as crowding services, draining funds and driving down wages.

Also, if legal and once citizens, each can bring in two indigent parents who can use our services. They are part of the service drain problem, not part of the solution. The more that come, the more payment will accrue. The social security suspense fund SOME have been paying into while working illegally doesn't begin to offset what they use before they reach retirement age, much less the more than paid in benefits they would get after retiring.

What would help our social security funds would be limiting immigration, cutting family reuinification to just spouse and minor children to free up visas for workers we need within existing quotas, getting rid of birthright citizenship like every country in the EU and Canada have, and letting market pressures raise wages here. Then we can say social security can be taken out as a percentage of income at a higher level than it is, and pay for those who will retire. Too bad, isn't it, that after funding these services illegals have used to the point where they are drained, the money is no longer there to pay for baby boomer retirement, isn't it?

The good economic numbers such as they are from mass immigration is a pyramid game, and as these people take services legalized, would blow up in our faces.

You seem to be making the assumption that illegals contribute more to our tax base than they take from it but that is simply not true. Some areas that our taxes support the illegals are, free public school, reduced and free school lunches, WIC, landfills and trash collection, more needed police and firemen, court cost and public defenders, roads, increased needs for jails, and the list goes on. Every service you receive that is tax payed they also receive not to mention the rising health care cost due to the mandatory treatment without means of payment at ERs across the US. They pay into the tax system via sales tax but in most cases don't pay into income tax. They take jobs from citizens because of the ability of employers to exploit them with little fear of reprisal and if the same job was given to a citizen they would have to pay into the tax system. I am not against a guest worker program provided it first requires the employer to hire citizens if possible.

Well let's put it this way, if the economy isn't rising in numbers, then apparently things will have to equal out and then we should have no problems supporting ourselves. More jobs would be filled by the unemployed in our country, and then we would be more self reliant, and the taxes will be going where they always go to the government, besides the more who immigrate here the more laws and rights are changed, the more our roads need repairs, the more gasoline we consume, etc... causing taxes to rise.

Are you trying to say that illegal immigrants are doing us some favor financially? You're kidding right?? Tell that the the hospitals and clinics! Tell that to the American man or woman that would take the job IF IT WERE OFFERED! But instead replaced by some illegal that will accept below minimum wage and live w/ 25 other illegals doing the same! Amnesty is bunk, and your effort to show up with some economical reasoning on this issue is lacking any strength whatsoever. Its not even a debate.

Deportation is the answer. Apparently you do not live in a border state.
