What kind of popping sound..is it comming from the floor or farther up towards the front of the car..there are a few things i want you to try ..I want you to go down the road and let go or the steering wheel then hit the breaks hard enough but not so hard that you will lock up the wheels..if you take off to one side or the other ..that means you have a faulty tie-rod end. And the next question is if you go a bit faster than the speed limit on a highway does the steering wheel vibrate ..if it does that means you may need a new ball joints..or tires..
You say there is a pop but that is not much information to help you with it could be one of many things..need more information to help you out.when you get more info just e-mail me..

It sounds like bad CV joints. Those are the drive shafts that connect the transmission to the front wheels. Do they pop when going around slow corners? Have your front end checked by a mechanic. Some don't charge for a look see. Good luck.

Could be motor mounts. Does it make the popping sound when you put it in drive, or when you accelerate? If it's when you accelerate it could also be the boots of the shocks. Breaking could be either/or.
If it just does it when you engage the gear, I agree with your friend. Motor mount

this is really common for neons. the problem is a poor design in ball joints in the upper and lower control arms. although annoying, it is no real problem.
