Is it possible to train the mind to be able to understand someone talking to you backwards? Would it be similar to learning a new language?

yes its possible.
i learnt to speck in a dyslexic language for a performance it was hard and took lot of work.
Irish Gaelic language (not English spoke with an Irish accent with i was told by a Finnish language teacher) speaks part (not all) of the sentences backwards.
"Jen is anim dom"= Jen is my name (instead of) My name is Jen.

Tez if you were suggesting Irish speck that way specking English is a bit insulting so i hope you meant the Gaelic language.

I think yes, it should work, it would be even easier than learning a new language.

You'd occasinally learn to translate between backwards and forwads at will.

You would also discover that pop music is a lot more interesting than it may seem at first glance
