Well the kind we use to make as kids went a little something like this:
Take a cup of warm water, put a few heaping tablespoons of sugar in, and stir. Sometimes we would add a little foodcoloring for looks.
Then, take a pencil and tie a string (maybe 6 inches long) around it. Drop the string into the water and let sit for a few days. The sugar and water would attach itself to the string (by some scientific miracle) and then in a few days we would have what some would call "rock candy". Edible and yummy. (That's of course, if you're 10 years old!) I've tried it not too long ago with my kids and it's not as yummy as it used to be!!
:o)

It takes about 3 cups of sugar to 1 cup of water. Boil the water and dissolve the sugar. Tie a string to a pencil with a weight at the bottom such as a washer. Hang the string into a container that can take hot liquids and pour the syrup into the container. As it cools the crystals will adhere to the string.

first dissolve some sugar in water.
then take a string and tie it on the middle of a stick.
then put the sugar mixture in a glass and keep the tick in the glass in such a way that the string is almost half in the water.
after some days u will notice that a sugar crystal is formed a the base of the string
