Look at the sky for new moon that is the actual 1 st day of the month.
You can look at a candler(any in USA or weather on Internet, it gives sun rise sunset, moon phases, moon rise and sets) that gives phases of moon, and calculate it from new moon or full moon also. Chaturthi means Fourth day and it is on the fourth day from new moon(Amass, the day you do not see noon at all). 1st day is the day on which moon is visible for a shortest time.
There is an Hindu/Julian calender on Internet, you can book mark it, will have all important days like Holly and Diwali.
