The Police do not need to be involved in such petty neighbourly disputes. So much Police time is wasted on trivial little squabbles like this that it detracts resources from serious crime fighting. At the moment is sounds as though the situation is nothing more than verbal sparring so don't escalate it and make it worse. It sounds as though you and your neigbours never left the playground and are now running to the teacher to complain but you are both at fault and are merely trying to get the other in trouble. Your neighbours are laying the bait and your biting so stop it right now! Be the bigger person. So often these silly disputes quickly get out of hand and result in charges for Criminal Damage, Battery, Threatening Behaviour, etc, etc. So don't do anything more than simply ignoring your neighbours. The Police have more important things to do with their precious time than dealing with such banal issues as this.
On the ASBO front you have done nothing to warrant an application being made for one against you. An ASBO is designed to put a stop to a persistent pattern of behaviour. Now if you constantly stood outside your neighbours house shouting obscenties relating to sex and travel (F*** Off), you could find yourself before a Magistrate looking to sanction your behaviour. Responding to a comment directed at you is not necessarily anti-social in their eyes of the law unless someone else hears it and feels threatened or intimidated in which case you could be charged with a Public Order offence but that is a different matter.

The utilisation of vulgar invective is a summary offence in England, could land you in court, and will not do your case any good.
If, for whatever reason, you do not work, it is none of your neighbour's business, and if they are falsely accusing you of crime this can rank as harassment, which is also a summary offence. A chat with the Citizens' Advice Bureau should give you some constructive ideas about how to deal with this problem.
I work in a Magistrate's Court, and every week I see Assault, Harassment and Battery trials arising out of neighbour-disputes between apparently respectable people.
However, you cannot expect to be treated with dignity if you do not mete out the same measure. It is socially expected that one should work for one's living, be considerate to neighbours in respect of noise and your general pattern and style of living, and not use foul language. If you transgress against these rules, then the Magistrates may become prejudiced against you if evidence can be proven in court that you have behaved in an un-social manner.

Why not make a diary of the snide comments they make, and report THEM before they decide to report you for some sort of verbal Harassment, you never know they might be trying the same thing, get the first knock in :)

One word of warning, you have to tell any prospective buyer about fallings out like this is anyone like the police or environmental health get involved. If they do report you to the police and you fail to inform a prospective buyer, you can and likely will be sued. This might not be relevant, but I'm glad I put up with my noisy neighbour, as I don't need to let anyone know about him when I sell my house.

Yes they could report you - the police will probably laugh at them though - just ignore them - laugh and walk away - that hurts them more because you are not reacting to them - you become 'non-entertaining'.
There are always prats like this about - just don't play into their hands.

You can say whatever you like to them. However, you cannot touch them, because then it becomes assault. You should try sitting down together and working out whatever difference you have with each other. The less you talk, the worse off it will be.

a local chap took 17 years to get a 6yr asbo! if you argue again don`t threaten them or you will be in court, my advice would be to tell them to just shut up and go away just keep saying it over and over and if they threaten you call the law. make sure you have a witness to back you up, sounds to me like they are jealous, have a think.
