Well, I'm not a Mormon, but I'm Christian. What I know is that it's not a sin to drink alcohol, just a sin to be separated from God, which may occur if you are drunk. I can see why a spiritual man would like to be the one to maintain the flow of alcohol to the community. Govern the quantity, and make a profit.

Who knows and who cares? Maybe since he was the mayor he actually had to be involved in setting the ordinance or whatever... I am not sure why this matters...
Maybe he was giving himself the power so he could say "sorry we aren't going to actually sell it." afterall, it does say he was authorized to sell or give as he in his wisdom shall judge...that means he could have NOT sold the liquor to anyone because it was in his wisdom not to.
Hail Jesus... wow, seriously. I think you may have a little explaining to do in the next life...good luck with that.

Being the mayor, Joseph Smith had secular duties to perform. Being a prophet, he also had spiritual duties to perform. Often, the spiritual and secular do not fit hand in glove.
He was simply carrying out the duties of his secular office at a time when he was acting as mayor. He would not have been acting as prophet at that moment in time....simple.

I guess because he was the mayor and it is part of the mayor's job to run the city. Part of running the city is to manage liquor disbursement.

He may have wanted to sell to Indians. He was known to be a heavy drinker, and a womanizer....(maybe he was even a con-artist)
