It depends. The rich in Europe (kings, courts, dukes, etc...) hired for commission composers and musicians for their own entertainment. For the most part they gave the composer instructions on plot (happy, sad, religious, secular or non-religious).

The peasants also went to the theater. The shows they went to depended on where they went. Most churches had elbaorate music, obviously religious. If they went to the local theater or just got together to create a play the theme is more than likely secular (it's where we get today's folk songs from).

every range of people went to the theator in those years. The TV reseption was real bad
