I brought a new laptop with has Windows Vista Pre installed. I would like Windows XP, so I have bought a Windows XP Home edition disc and taken it to PC world so they can downgrade it for me. But I have been told it can't be done. Are they lying?

You can't downgrade it unless you format the hard drive and do a fresh install. This is not really a downgrade, it's a fresh install of xp, so yeah, they are right. But, you can still install the full version of xp.

I don't think that they're lying on that one. Downgrading would mean taking away newer files or changing them to older ones and Windows will not let you do that. From the way I see it, I think that you could either, if you have another computer with xp on it, you could, with a computer cable, connect the two together and erase the laptop's hard drive completely, wipe it, and just transfer all of the files from that computer to your laptop, or you could insert the xp cd in your laptop and manually copy all of the files on the cd and then paste them in the main system folder, which would take some hours for the transfer to be complete, and then after that delete the vista files from the laptop, then restart it, and it should then be the xp operating system. I'm not 100% sure on both of these things, but I have tried them both and they both worked for me, but the case was a little different, I was upgrading. You can not "downgrade" your version of Windows (or most other softwares)

They would need to format the hard drive and do a full install of Windows XP to get back to it. They probably do not want to do that (without your permission) because it would wipe everything on the hard drive - all you music, videos, data files, etc.

The install is simple enough that you should be able to insert the XP CD, boot the computer and let it do the install. You shouldnot need their help to do it.

It's possible that the hardware is new enough that there aren't XP drivers for all of it.
