If possible, stick with the same artist. I'm planning my back piece and my artist is about 2 hours away and I plan to make the trip for each part of it and the touch ups. I've heard horror stories of people being unhappy with how the new artist changed the original idea and concept.

Do not switch artists, it will change the look of the piece. It's like if you ask different people to paint the Mona Lisa, they'll each paint it differently and each will have it's own slightly different feel.
The person that starts it should finish it.
You could see about breaking the piece up into smaller parts if possible, and getting smaller parts completed before the other parts get added on. This would allow another artist to fill in another part of it from start to finish.

Stay with the same artist as they all have their own unique style, and it can be difficult to find someone with a similar style that you will be happy with. If you are concerned about moving and being in a place where you can't get to this particular artist, sit down and talk with them about how long it is going to take and if you do move, ask them if there is anyone that they recommend to continue working on your tattoo.

I think if you like the artist and he/she has done quality work to date, stick with them. They have an idea of what you're looking for, and starting over with a new artist will be tough. They won't understand it the same way.

Try not to lose the artist you started with.
Everyone has a different style. Keep in touch.
If you do lose the artist - find a different one and ask to see samples of their work for comparison first.

You will not be the same person in five years as you are today. Think very carefully about what you do to your body today following trends, it cost more to remove a tat than to have it put on.
