For my wedding we had a small but pretty cutting cake, and then a sheet cake in the back that was cut and ready to serve right away after we had cut our cake. It saved a lot of time, everyone loved their cake, and no one needed to know that it was a sheet cake. You will save a lot of money this way.. and remember.. it's just cake!!!

Get the cake of your dreams but just get it small!! Then have the baker make a sheet cake to serve the bulk of the guest with..... it's very standard practice and no one will know the difference. Just have them take the cake to the back.... to slice and serve the cake. This way you get your fancy cake at less then $1.00 a slice!!

how about a wedding sheet cake? i have seen some very pretty ones.
also some people buy a very small wedding cake to be displayed and have the same flavor in a sheet cake (not visible to guests) for serving.

Wal mart. Seriously. good cake and less then 250 bucks for a cake that serves about 200 people. Put your own flowers and/or decorations on and your set.

Visit any bakery in Chinatown. The cakes are surprisingly very fancy for the pricing.

Do a cupcake tree. Buy some pretty cake decorations and have someone in your family make them for you and set them up at the wedding.

Gristedes, maybe even Food Emporium.
Of course, the cake will suck.
