My dog got pregnant (I think) last week by a pit bull and we're getting her fixed. Not because it was a pit but because we wouldn't know what to do w/all the puppies.

Anyways, everyone I have told is telling me how wrong it is to kill the puppies. Is it wrong? I'm starting to have doubts about it and I already took her to the vet this morning. HELP!!!

FYI, I DO TAKE GOOD CARE OF MY DOG....THAT STUPID PIT BULL CAME INTO MY YARD AND GOT INTO MY FENCE WHERE I KEEP MY DOG. IT IS THE PIT'S OWNER RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP HIS DOG ON A LEASH. IT'S THE LAW! SO STOP TELLING ME I WAS IRRESPONSIBLE. I DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY TO GET HER FIXED BEFORE THIS ALSO.

Not wrong, responsible. If your girl was bred last week, you don't even know if she's pregnant. You may not be "killing" anything. However, it's still a good idea to get her spayed. Now you won't ever have to worry about it again. It's a shame that she wasn't spayed sooner, but...

It's so easy for people to say, "whelp the puppies and sell them or adopt them!" -- how convenient for someone not even involved! They don't realize the time, difficulty, and money that goes into whelping a litter and raising it properly for the full 8 weeks that puppies should be with their mother. They obviously don't think about the fact that people aren't lining up for Pit mix puppies (if they were, why are there so many young Pit mixes sitting in shelters?). So easy when you're sitting on the sidelines.

It may not be an easy decision to make, but I still applaud you for being responsible. If you're still feeling bad about your decision, consider donating some time at your local animal shelter. You'll quickly realize that your actions ultimately prevented more suffering.

Sometimes as pet owners we have to do whats best for our animals .If she is only 6months old that's too early to have pups for her .And at a week you don't know if she is really pregnant. The vet will know.Don't let what others think stop you from doing whats good for your pet and for your household.Getting rid of puppy's is not easy and more and I hate to say this but them being part Pit bull won't help anyway. If you lived in Ontario Canada the puppy's would have to be euthanized or spend their life in a muzzle when out in public. It's a sad law to think that it was made to protect the public from the people who own Pits but don't have the brains to train them right or give them no training. It's the owners fault in my opinion who should be punished if a Pit attacks someone not the dog .Sorry there I go again on a rant .So get the dog fixed she won't miss or mourn puppys she doesn't know she will have.

It's the responsible thing to do. I've been in your situation before, with my family's cat who ended up being impregnated by a local stray tom, just one week before her spay surgery was scheduled at the vet. We made the same decision and it was better for everyone.

You are preventing more unwanted puppies from taking up space in shelters and eventually being euthanized. Despite what others have posted, don't be fooled. You will NOT be able to make any money off a litter of mixed breed puppies. You'll most likely have more difficulties finding homes for them at all.

Also, consider that it's entirely possible for dogs to have severe complications during pregnancy which could result in expensive vet treatments (some dogs do need caesarian sections) or possibly the death of both puppies and mother.

You've made the responsible choice. It's terrible when things like this happen, but one has to consider the greater impact. Thank you for getting your girl spayed, too. She'll be much better off in the long run. Good for you. =)

With so many dogs and puppies that are already here waiting for homes, I think you are doing the right thing.

Don't worry about all the people saying you're cruel for killing unborn puppies. I think it would be more cruel to allow them to be born only to be put down later. If the pups were to find homes, it would only mean death for another dog or puppy.

Its a complicated situation, but take comfort in the fact that you will not be letting your dog add to the overpopulation. By having your dog spayed now, you may very well be saving other lives.

You're doing the right thing.

This is unfortunate, but it is not wrong. It is unfortunate because it would have been better for your dog to have been spayed before this incident, but that is water under the bridge.

What would be wrong would be putting your dog through the stress of having puppies and nursing them so that you would potentially be sending them to the pound to be euthanized.

After this incident, you will no longer have to worry about this sort of thing. Preventing more unwanted pets is the right thing to do, and your neighbor's pit bull should be neutered, as well, since your neighbor obviously has no interest in taking responsibility for whatever puppies may result in their inability to control their dog.

Millions of animals are euthanized every year because there aren't any homes for them. These are conscious animals with personalities who have formed bonds with other living creatures. Aborting one week old fetuses - no consciousness, no personalities, just blobs of dna - gives dogs that are already alive a better chance to stay alive. You are absolutely doing the right thing.

Anyone who tells you it's wrong can go to their local shelter and decide if they still feel the same. Or maybe they would like to take all of your dog's puppies and give them a home? Yeah, didn't think so.

You're absolutely doing the right thing.

Pregnancy and delivery, nursing and weaning is hard on a mother. You're dog will be better off for it.

The puppies are not wanted. It's hard to find homes for them and that's compounded by them being part pitbull. Wonderful dogs, but they need special training and most people don't have that ability. No matter what breed they are, there's a good chance most of them would end up in abused homes or a shelter to live out their numbered days in a cage. A lot of shelters will not adopt out pit bulls.

Better now than later.

You're doing the right thing for your dog, whether she is pregnant or not, and it's too early to tell whether she is.

Raising puppies is a tremendous responsibility and takes a lot of time. Those who tell you "raise the puppies" are not the ones who will have to put in hours looking after them.

You have made the right decision and the responsible thing, it's just too bad that it wasn't earlier.

It's a DOG. In many places in the world, people EAT dog. I have eaten dog. I would not go out of my way to be cruel to a dog, but let's keep some perspective here. The operation will be performed by a professional, the dog will feel no pain and the number of unwanted dogs in the world will be kept where it is.

Don't lose a moment worrying about this. In much of the world there are people starving, and in the west, we have sixteen kinds of DIET dog food.

Keep it in balance, you made a good decision for the right reasons. Move on.
