It was thought that the ring finger of the left hand was directly connected (by blood supply) to the heart - so it seemed an appropriate custom.

Why can we use the 0.33 finger of the left hand? yet even at modern-day of cardiothoracic technology, that's no longer effortless to place a ring around the middle. So in the previous days that they had an effortless answer: they placed the hoop on the 0.33 finger which they believed had a vein, artery or nerve (a sort of a USB cable) working directly to the middle. and since the left hand is slightly nearer to the middle than the final, they placed engagement and wedding ceremony rings on the 0.33 finger of the left hand. (extremely, for the period of a few sessions in the previous, the hoop grow to be worn on the final hand; a prepare that keeps to as we talk in some cultures, because of the fact the final hand is seen extra righteous.)

'Cos the ring on that finger isn't in the way of anything :D

Seriously:
Old belief: it has the closest connection to the heart.

Before medical science discovered how the circulatory system functioned, people believed that a vein of blood ran directly from the third finger on the left hand to the heart.

Because of the hand-heart connection, they chose the descriptive name vena amori, Latin for the vein of love, for this particular vein.

Based upon this name, their contemporaries, purported experts in the field of matrimonial etiquette, wrote that it would only be fitting that the wedding ring be worn on this finger. By wearing the ring on the third finger of the left hand, a married couple symbolically declares their eternal love for each other.

In Western cultures a wedding ring is traditionally worn on the ring finger. According to tradition, the wedding ring is worn on the left ring finger because the vein in the left ring finger, referred to as the vena amoris was believed to be directly connected to the heart, a symbol of love.
