The LCMS and the ELCA are two Lutheran church bodies in the United States. Lutheran(ism) is the denomination.

The LCMS actually produced a PDF to answer such a question:
http://www.lcms.org/graphics/assets/media/LCMS/wa_elca-lcms.pdf

I would read through their section on the differences between the Lutherans at
http://www.lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=2541

I would also suggest that a good book to read on this matter is 'What's Going on Among the Lutherans?'
http://www.amazon.com/Whats-Going-Among-Lutherans-Comparison/dp/0810004275/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-4126701-1300835?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174417058&sr=8-1

I have found it useful understanding not only the differences between one Lutheran church body and another, but the differences between Reformed, Roman Catholic and the Lutherans. It is a good read.

check out www.lcms.org for the missouri synod statement of faith and www.elca.org for theirs. Comparing the two will give you the best overview of the similarities and differences.
