This is the next generation of 911, but no 911 center currently has the capability of receiving text messages via a 911 line. However, they are working on it and you'll most likely hear about it very soon.

If you ever are in that situation, the 911 call taker will stay on the phone while tryng to track it and will have methods of getting some info from the caller simply by using the buttons on the phone.

I agree with the poster above. In this world of text messages everywhere it may at times be a good idea to text 911. Unfortunately, they will have no way to track you if you do that. An open cell phone line is easy to track (given the right equipment only available to law enforcement and government agencies) and will give clues to forward to responding authorities. The dispatchers are trained to be discrete with open lines and have a lot experience dealing with it.

For a complete answer, Don't call 911 to find out. Contact the police department and ask them if your local 911 has this capability.

Silly? I don't think that's silly at all, I think it's a commendable idea. It would be useful, if you're in a hiding situation and not in direct view of the bad people. But i wonder if you're in certain situations if it wouldn't be better to discreetly dial it and leave the line open (for better tracking) and then talk to "bad" people while sublty saying "Why are we going west?" (or other sublties), "You really think you're not going to stick out in a red Chevlle with vanity plates?" Hopefully my answer doesn't sound stupid it's hard to convey what I'm trying to say by typing.
