I applied for financial aid and 18602 is my outcome efc. What the crap man!? I'm not even applying for colleges over 18grand. So does that mean no financial aid for me or what!? My parents aren't wanting to pay for my college education. This is like my last chance. What am I gonna do?

If your EFC is more than or equal to the total cost of your education, you will be ineligible for *need-based* financial aid. You will still be eligible for an Unsubsidized Stafford Loan (up to $3,500 for a Freshman for 07-08) and any merit-based financial aid that your school offers. I would also encourage you to explore private funding opportunities. There are plenty of academic scholarships out there. I trust the following scholarship search sites:

As you've by now noticed, there is no place on the FAFSA to indicate whether or not you will be receiving financial support from your parents. This is intentional. The government views college financing as a partnership between the student, the school, AND the parents. Each party is expected to contribute, with the exact contributions based on family's EFC. To some extent, Financial Aid offices must award you financial aid based on this "partnership" premise. No one *wants* to have to pay for college, but those with the means to do so are expected to. Helping to pay for a child's education is generally not seen as a parent's "choice."

That said, you are welcome to (and should) speak to your school about your situation. Most schools have an "appeal" process wherein the student can submit documentation showing that they are independent from their parents. Keep in mind that most of these schools review these situations as "all or nothing," by which I mean that, if you are independent, you must be completely independent. They will likely expect you to show that you are completely self-supporting (usually that you have been paying for your food, housing, insurance, transportation all on your own for a specified period of time).

I have encountered a number of students in your situation. Each student approaches the matter a little differently. You can

* wait to attend college until you are 24 years of age and can be deemed independent according to FAFSA formula.
* attend community college instead or attend community college for the first 1-2 years and then transfer to the school of your choice
* make a deal with your parents in which they pay for the first two year of your schooling and you pay for the remaining years. It's possible that, after they have paid for two years of your college, their EFC will decrease and you will become eligible for further financial aid.
* appeal your dependency status in the manner mentioned above

Your efc is very very high...I don't think that you will qualify for financial aid...you might want to get a job or loan that will help you go to college. If u do get financial aid, you wont get a lot of money....Sorry..the lower your efc the more money you will get to help fund your college expenses...to save money, you could go to a local community college and stay with your parents or off campus housing...
