There is a really big on going debate about this subject in the Muslim community.
In the Quran it doesn't mention not smoking, but only not drinking alcohol and not doing "controlling drugs"
But then Islam also tells Muslims to not do anything that will harm them. Smoking harms you, so it kind of goes against that.
Smoking is allowed, but it is frowned upon. You are right though, a lot of people do smoke in "Muslim" countries. That may be because they don't realize the harmful effects of smoking.
Just say no to smoking :)

I don't know if they're supposed to, but just about every person from an Islamic background whom I've known since college smoked like a chimney. I remember reading a book by V.S. Naipaul about his travels in the Islamic world, and he was interviewing one Mullah who claimed that Muslims shouldn't smoke because tobacco was a Jewish conspiracy. I wonder how far he got with that...

The community's behavior does not ALWAYS reflect the religion. They will say "it is not a sin"...fine. Anything that inflicts harm on the body, is forbidden. It is like slow suicide. The other factor is "wasting money". God gave us this money (this is our belief that one of God's many graces is money), on Judgment Day, we will be accounted for every penny we spent. What shall we tell God when we wasted (during a life time) thousands on a substance that harmed our health? What stopped us from giving this amount to the needy?

Are you scared of Fire in Hell(Gehennam)?
It is only for the transgressors - the enemy of God!
God is most mecifull too. He will not catch us for small errors or sins.
Smoking injurse human body.
Smoking has nothing to do with religions.
It is a bad human habit.
Islamic laws do not allow self destruction and harmfull acts, by any individual,in any shape.

I would imagine that anything harmful to your health is frowned upon....in any religion.
I am a christian....and we know that the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, don't defile the temple.
