I have a shih tzu/maltese cross and she won't stop eating her poop. She poops in the house while I'm at work and then eats it. She never really does this when she goes outside, but she is also on a leash outside. I know she is doing this because there are days when she won't go to the bathroom outside at all, which means she already has...inside....and eaten it. She knows she's not suppose to and never pees in the house. I have tried powder and switching her food. Are there any other options???

They actually make pills that you can give to your dog that makes them stop eating their poo. I had the same problem with my pug, but with the pill she has stopped completely. You can buy it at pet stores and also ask your vet about it, I bought mine through Dr. Foster and Smith online. I had no side effects from it. She still acted normal, ate normal and everything. I forget what it is called but it makes their poo taste bitter (like it taste good before) and discourages them from eating it. Good luck hope this helps.

she is not suppose to pee in the house?? if she is locked in the house all day where else can she pee? she is probably eating her poop because she is bored and no doubt lonely. i have a 7 month old maltese/ shih tzu, they are active dogs. make sure she has heaps of toys that she can play with while you are at work. my 2 dogs are house dogs too but they have a huge back garden that they go out to ,when they desire too. switching food will make no difference.

Unfortunately all dogs eat poop. have you tried to put her in a pet carrier to train her. my dog will not go in the house or her carrier. I train her by putting her in her carrier during the day when I worked she slept with me at night. so she would not be in a cage to many hours. she is three years old now and I leave her out of her cage she has full run of the house. but she is always on the couch in the middle of the pillows when I leave and come home. Good luck!!

Technically this is known as coprophagia. It is not known why dogs eat their own feces. For some dogs it is a strong habit while others may never do it. One theory is that it may be related to boredom or stress. Another is that it is related to digestive deficiencies. Neither theory has any support at the present time. No one really knows what causes it.

I really don't have answer for you but my baby beagle does that too sometimes. We think it's because she's afraid she'll get disciplined if we find poop in the house. But she has gotten a lot better as she's getting older. We keep her in a kennel while we're gone during the day and when we get home she knows it's time to go potty. Dogs usually don't like to defacate where they sleep... and she's gotten a lot better holding her bladder too.

What have you switched her food to? Most animals eat their own poo because they are trying to get more nutrients. Try feeding Innova or even Natural Balance is ok. I know its expensive but in the long run its worth it.

I doubt it sweety. You just have to live with a dog that eats her own poop....*shudders*
