My daughter woke up with a runny nose and head congestion... I was just curious what everyone finds to be the most effective cold medicine for their kids and why?

Right now we had triaminic in the medicine cabinet, but shortly I'll be making a trip to the grocery store and will be getting something better for her... hence why I'm curious as to what everyone finds works the best! Thanks!

Thanks everyone. She sure does have a fever (100.3), and said her "brain hurts", so I gave her some motrin along with the crappy triaminic to hold her over. She's showing no signs of anything other than a nasty headcold (no cough or stomach problems), so thanks to everyones responses I know what to get her.

oh yeah, thankfully the triaminic didn't wire her all up, she actually went right back to bed and has been out cold for almost 2 hours now!

I use the Tylenol cold formula...it's liquid and is a suspension formula, which means kids don't taste the medicine, they taste the flavoring that the medicine is suspended in! Clever. And, it works great. My son is 3 and loves it. It's easy to give and easy to take. They do have a congestion formula...just one of many!

I use the triaminic congestion patches for my daughter at night. You can stick it on skin and it doesn't hurt to peel off. Sudafed makes a plug in with aroma disks for congestion. As far as over the counter...I stick to Motrin and Tylenol. There is a Tylenol called Simply Stuffy. Good stuff. I stay away from any liquid triaminic, just because it makes my daughter wired. Good luck!!

Tylenol or Motrin alone only help pain/fever. They won't relieve runny nose or congestion. Dimetapp works best for my son. I tried Triaminic and it just never did any good. I think it's more for allergies like Benadryl rather than cold symptons. If it's allergies, Triaminic should work... if it's a cold, I'd go with Dimetapp and some motrin if she has fever.

We've used Triaminic or the store-brand equivalent. Sounds as though she needs just the decongestant (no antihistamine, pain reliever, or other ingredients).

I think there's a new study that says that cold meds don't help kids ... but we used them with success. I've always been careful to double-check the dosage and only give the meds that are really necessary.

Get this stuff called Tussin CF. its a cheaper wal-mart brand but i will swear by this stuff :) It really does work! and its safe for kids. Another good one is Motrin cold and cough.

I am twelve years old and I am home sick today with my dad who is sick too. I took Tylonal and I asked my dad and he said I have never taken anything else even when I was three. I feel so much better now that I had Tylonal.
