Mostly its a time where folks give you gifts, but I have seen several of my friends give parents a gift certificate to their fave restaurant so they can have a recover from the wedding night....but beyond that I haven't seen it much, I had wondered too, but I think a small gesture would be ok.
However with you paying for all of it, I really don't know that its necessary considering you don't have anything (in this case) to thank them for, not to mention how bad you mother has been!

On a tight budget? Are you white trash? Because that's what you assumed I was when I said I wasn't going on a honeymoon right away. You shouldn't make assumptions when you know nothing about the situation. Both my fiancee and I are college educated and have good jobs. I just don't put as much stock in a fancy wedding as you do and would rather spend my money on other things.
If you want a gift to give your parents, how about a nicer, more sensible daughter?

I've never heard of the bride or groom giving their parents gifts at the rehearsal dinner unless they were in the wedding party. You give roses to the mothers on the day of the wedding, if you would like. Otherwise, only the people in the wedding party should receive gifts. Thank you and GOD bless.

I've always understood that the gifts to the wedding party are to thank them for standing up with you... sort of a gift in return for the expense of buying their dress/renting their tux, etc.
I've not seen gifts for the parents before, but certainly if you want to do that, it's perfectly fine.

I don't know if it is expected but it would certainly be a lovely gesture.
