We may be going overseas soon, and I was thinking about purchasing a laptop to stay connected to family back home. How do internet connections work over there, and about how much does it cost per month? Anybody who has done this, please tell me your experience! Also, what is the best brand of laptop to buy for when we are deployed? Thanks!

I'm in Iraq right now.

You can carry your laptop onboard the plane with you. Usually you will pack most of your stuff and it will go separately from you, but you get to have typically a carry on bag (Assault pack style), and one personal bag (Which most people use to carry on laptops.)

Dell has some of the best laptops for cheap. if you're looking for a good, price worthy, reliable laptop, and you're not exactly a computer Guru, I say shoot for a Dell. The service they offer is pretty solid, the warranty options are sound, and the product is quality.

As for Internet, it depends on where you are going. Most bases have one of the following:

1) An Internet Cafe (Or several of them), which run from completely free to use (In fact, I'm at one right now), to a few bucks an hour. Most of them will allow you to connect your own laptop.

2) Internet directly in your room. It's going to be Satellite Internet, and it will range from Free (As it is at a duty station near where I am), and maybe 50-60 a month. It's not the best quality, and the connection won't always be spectacular, but it gets the job done.

Almost anywhere you go will have Internet access, either at coffee shops (Yes, we have those on the posts over here, heh), Internet cafe's, MWR's, or in your rooms.

Of course, it depends on your branch of service and where you're going, but the same is true for just about every military installation. There are some little hole in the wall installations that may not give you Internet access. They are few, and far between.

Even so, a laptop is ideal for all of the other functions. You might find yourself with a lot of downtime, so having a portable computer is not a bad investment at all. I use mine for E-books, writing, video games, movies, music, Internet, and even duty related work. I use the damn thing all the time. It's the most useful thing I have here either for work, or for entertainment.

It will really depends on which country you are going to... every country is different for the Internet services.

For the computer always look for the one with world wide warranty.

If you can't find a one with world wide warranty, you can buy it in the country you are going to go to ensure you get the best cover!

Just for you information laptop parts are very expensive! If you are intented to just get connected (not traval around), or you need to stay there for a long time. Buy a desk top.

I think it is just fine to take a laptop. My husband has been deployed twice since we have been together and had a laptop both times so that we could talk. In Afghanistan, he had a connection in his tent. In Iraq, at one FOB he had to take his laptop to the internet cafes to use. At another one, soldiers had net in their rooms ($40 a month).

He had to clean it regularly with canned air because of all the sand and dust. Sand and dust will kill your computer if you dont take care of it.

Depending on where you go, the internet may or may not be stable. You may also have commo blackouts that will interfere with your ability to communicate with people here.

Get yourself a good used laptop to take. It is much easier than waiting for hours to use a computer.

Sorry couldnt give much more than that because you didnt provide much detail. But good luck to you!

It really depends where you are going. The internet is the same worldwide, but just like the US you can get it free som eplaces and pay others. I would check out the Dell site through AAFES, you get free shipping and a 10-20% off.
