For most baking, margarine is acceptable. But for shortbread, it does change the taste, and texture a little bit. Being that shortbread is a traditional cookie, I'm not sure you would want it altered. The cookies will turn out, just not the same as it would if you used butter.

You cannot use margarine for shortbread. You will be unhappy with the results (that is if you've ever had real shortbread and are a fan).
Margarine does not work in baking the same way butter does. Too, shortbread relies on so few ingredients, it's always best to use the best and purest.
If you try the margarine, I don't want to know abou it.

Certainly you can, and nothing unusual will happen. In fact, you can use plain non-fat yogurt in place of either margarine or butter. The only difference will be your shortbread will have less fat in it and therefore be better for your cholesterol levels.

Yes, you can but butter tastes better and is healthier. Most margarines have trans fats - check the label. Professional chefs prefer to bake with butter for the bread and pastries they eat themselves!

yes, it´s less fatty...and less tasty, shortbread has always had a butter flavour and you´ll lose that taste but the results are almost the same

No, it would not be shortbread if it didn't contain butter. The texture would probably be wrong.
