Autism is classified by the World Health Organization and American Psychological Association as a developmental disability that results from a disorder of the human central nervous system. It is diagnosed using specific criteria for impairments to social interaction, communication, interests, imagination and activities. The causes, symptoms, etiology, treatment, and other issues are controversial.
Autism manifests itself "before the age of three years" according to the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases. Autistic children are marked by delays in their "social interaction, language as used in social communication, or symbolic or imaginative play" .
Autism, and the other four pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), are all considered to be neurodevelopmental disorders. They are diagnosed on the basis of a triad, or group of three behavioral impairments or dysfunctions: 1. impaired social interaction, 2. impaired communication and 3. restricted and repetitive interests and activities. These three basic characteristics reflect Dr. Leo Kanner's first reports of autism emphasizing "autistic aloneness" and "insistence on sameness."
Stacking cans (or otherwise obsessively sorting objects) at a very young age may be an early indicator of autism. From a physiological standpoint, autism is often less than obvious in that outward appearance may not indicate a disorder. Diagnosis typically comes from a complete patient history and physical and neurological evaluation.

Autism is a behavior disorder, characterized by an impairment in social communication, social interaction, and social imagination. Those with autism often have a restricted range of interests and display repetitive behaviors and mannerisms, along with altered reactions to the everyday environment.
Autism is a disorder that affects predominantly males (four times as many males as females have autism). According to studies, autism is increasing in the pediatric population. In 1966, 4–5 babies per 10,000 births developed autism, while in 2003, two studies showed that between 14–39 babies per 10,000 develop the disorder. Although there is no question that more clinical cases are being detected, the increase in prevalence of autism is in dispute as diagnostic practices have changed over the years and this heightened awareness has changed the evaluation of previously unrecognized cases.

Autism (sometimes called “classical autism”) is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. Other ASDs include Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Experts estimate that three to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism. Males are four times more likely to have autism than females.

Autism is a developmental disability. It is also spectrum disorder which means people who have autism fall within a spectrum of certain behavioral characteristics. a child with the classic signs of autism will be diagnosed as having early infantile autism. These behaviors will include lack of speech, poor eye contact, self stimulatory behaviors, and no interest in social contact. children can be diagnosed as having mild autism, or high functioning autism. Asperger's syndrome is anther form of autism that mainly affects a persons ability to relate to people and socialize. It is not uncommon for people who have autism to also have a degree of mental retardation.
Fragile X is the only syndrome that can be tested for autistic like characteristics.

Autism is a psychological disorder whereby the patient has difficulties in making contact with his (her) surroundings. Autists are like enclosed in a psychological shell. Autists are also given to repetitive and compulsive behaviour. If they are denied this, they may go into irrational severe tantrums. Autism comes in levels (not all autists are affected in the same way) and is tought to be genetic of origin. Another very special feat is that some (not all) autists are "brillant minds" (savants), who can recite a page of a phone directory after looking at it for a minute or recite the first 200 prime numbers. Therapy is mostly by special education. Some results can be achieved.

people with autism are often described as 'living a life behind glass'. they tend to be extremely intelligent and work really hard. they do find it hard making friends as sometimes people with autism cannot understand jokes or certain expressions such as 'it's raining cats and dogs' - people with autism may not realise that you were not meaning it literally and may get confused. there are also many other disorders on the autism spectrum, such as asperger syndrome. asperger syndrome is not as severe as autism but the characteristics are quite often the same.
