In Islamic terminology it means "to save life, honour. or property (either one's own or of other be­lievers) by hiding one's belief or religion".

as a sunni muslim i've never heard of this. i did check out the link that the person above me suggested-the wikipedia link.

if it means that i have to renounce my faith just cuz i'm worried that i would get persecuted then i don't buy it.
there are countless of stories of early muslim converts who were tortured to give up on their faith. example bilal was made to lay down on the hot sand with a huge stone on this back or possibly stomach to renounce his faith. he told his torturers if my tongue let me i would renounce the shahada but its not!
