Stress is a complex phenomena. Exercise is very important as stated here. Also, most of our stress is mental and not physical. To deal with mental stress, you must work on two things. First you must watch internal self talk. If you think: People are jerks. I just HATE this situation. How can people do this to me ... all of those thoughts will produce stress and irritation You must work on stopping negative self talk. Replace it with realistic talk.
Next in line with this, you need to learn to relax. Stress and relaxation are opposites. You cannot be relaxed and stressed at the same time. Problem is, relaxation is difficult to do. Meditate, use imagery (like a mental trip to the beach or the mountains) to relax and calm you. Practice.
With exercise, stopping negative self talk and relaxation. You can beat stress. Finally, laugh and have fun. That produces endorphins too!

One of the reason "cutters" find the practice helpful in reducing stress is that cutting causes pain which causes the release of the body's natural painkiller...endorphins. So, you can accomplish this by doing healthy activities that release endorphins.
The best way is exercise. Have you ever heard of a "runner's high?" That is a major endorphine release after a particularly strenuous run (or other exercise). I'm not saying you'll reach that level very often, but exercise definitely does release endorphins and is considered one of the most effective methods for reducing stress.
Good luck to you.

Well done for not cutting yourself. Next time you feel the urge to cut yourself try holding an icecube in your hand. This has the same painful effect but doesn't involve the lasting scars. You could also try exercise, this releases happy hormones and will cheer you up. Find something you enjoy doing and are good at as then you will suceed and will feel good about yourself. good luck!

Take 5 deep slow breaths when you are feeling stressed. If you still feel bad after 5, do 5 more. I also eat ice. It's not good for your teeth, but better than cutting or purging. :) Good luck! :)

If you have an ipod, download some soft music like "Always on you side- Sherly Crow" etc. and go to the park and just sit down there for a while. If you don't like to go out, you can have a nice hot bubble bath and listen to your ipod. It really worked with me!!

do NOT squeeze ice cubes- if it hurts then it is self harm. exercise is amazing for stress and it is good for you. it's kinda cold but bundle up and go for a walk or run. just make sure you eat enough so that you do not pass out.

"Calming Your Anxious Mind."
by: Jefferey Brantley
is an excellent book for successfully dealing with stress, anxiety, fear, and panic.
Also "Coming to Our Senses."
By: Jon Kabat-Zinn.
This was the very first book I ever read on the subject, and was so helpful.

I masturbate to relieve stress. If you're a cutter why not try squeezing an ice cube in the palm of your hand instead? It's painful but comes with no risk of infection.
