Every child needs a passport to travel.
Depending on the laws of your respective countries, the child may be added to a parent's passport or must be issued its own passport.
Example: Australia and Japan are two countries that only issue a passport to an individual. Most countries are moving away from family passports.
It is possible that your child is entitled to a passport from each of its parents' countries and may even be entitled to a passport from their country of birth, if that is a third country! (Rare, but possible.)
If the child has their own passport, it will be easier for them to travel with only one parent. (Other measures prevent a child from being taken out of most countries without the consent of both parents. Having a family passport in itself doesn't help prevent this.)
Think about where you are travelling and which passport would be best for the child for that trip.

All people need a passport, regardless of age, whether some places will allow the child to be placed on the parent's passport or they need one for themselves
