Car is a 2004 Volkswagon Passat 2 litre SE model.

Car is telling me to STOP and check coolant level and is overheating?

Have checked the coolant level and all looks fine.

Anyone got any ideas what can be causing this?

It's most likely the sensor, thermostat or both. Thermostat is easier and cheaper to replace ( you could do it) but the sensor is more difficult. Consult an auto electrician. Good luck.

Most likely a sensor has decided to fail. For info Passats have the front brake pad warning sensors fail, I ended up putting a wire link between the sensors to stop the alarm going off when starting up.
